Emma Miller award recipient – 2014
Julie first joined the QTU in 1983 and was elected as a Union Representative at Coombabah State School in June 1985. She went on to serve as Branch President and Secretary and as State Council or Conference Rep for Southport Branch or Area Council. The culmination of Julie’s QTU career was her service as Honorary Vice-President (1994-97) and full-time Vice-President (2006-2015). Julie was made a Life Member of the QTU and the AEU in 2015.
While Julie committed significant time and energy to a wide range of QTU campaigns, four key areas stand out: early childhood education; ICT; Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education; and women teachers and girls’ education. It was Julie who moved the motion securing gender equity on Union committees and representative bodies.
Julie was a member of the Queensland Council of Union’s Executive and longstanding chair of its Women and Equal Opportunity Committee.
