Responding to the teacher shortage crisis in Logan
Queensland Teachers' Journal, Vol 129 No 8, 1 November 2024, page no. 13
shortage is at crisis point and were determined to act. On Thursday 12 September, schools across this region participated in an “Outside the Gate” activity, organised by the Queensland Teachers’ Union (QTU).
The aim was to raise community awareness about the critical shortage of teachers and the impact on QTU members and student learning. This activity also allowed members in the south-east to stand in solidarity with QTU members facing this challenge statewide.
The activity was simple, yet powerful: stand outside school gates (proudly wearing all things QTU), engage with the community, and distribute letters under the name of the General Secretary outlining the issue, with an opportunity to take action to support teachers at their children’s school.
There were two versions of the letter − one for schools experiencing teacher shortages and another for schools supporting their colleagues. Mobilising members across Logan through collective action highlighted the gravity of the situation to the broader public while fostering a sense of unity among the membership.
Schools that took part reported positive responses from parents and community members. Volunteers handed out the letters with a smile, explaining what the campaign was about: “This is important information about our state schools. We want to keep our schools strong, but we need support.” Many parents, unaware of the extent of the shortage, were surprised to learn of the impacts.
This grassroots approach provided a “humanness” to a “numbers” problem. Instead of abstract figures or statistics, the community saw their own teachers − professionals they know and trust − taking a stand and gently asking for their support. This visibility helped deepen community understanding and, moving forward, may garner broader support for QTU initiatives.
The teacher shortage remains a pressing challenge, but initiatives like this remind us that even small actions can contribute to broader change. With ongoing advocacy, community support, and a unified front, Queensland’s schools will continue to push for solutions that ensure a strong, sustainable education system for all.
And as always, thank you to all the amazing QTU members who took part in making this event a success. You are amazing!
