Always learning
Queensland Teachers' Journal, Vol 129 No 6, 23 August 2024, page no 32.
Socialising is necessary as we age. There is nothing like a belly laugh and friendly talk with friends and relatives, as research has shown that getting out with friends simulates us both physically and emotionally.
This is one reason that the Queensland Retired Teachers Association continues to encourage retired teachers to join with others and learn more about the area we live in, whether it be Brisbane or other parts of our great state. The Events Committee has organised great activities that help retirees to socialise and learn more about different subjects. These are advertised in the monthly Newsletter.
If you have not yet joined the QRTA, please keep in touch and join the friendly members at the next outing. Some members had a wonderful experience when they ventured up to Mt Mee to learn more from the Maths Museum, which is owned by Dr Calvin and Rosemary Irons.
We have often heard students ask: “Why do I have to learn about this?” With changes in technology, many present problems can be solved with the use of a little machine, including calculators, computers and now AI. But how these machines are used needs to be understood.
As retirees, we also need to know and understand the latest changes in our financial situation. The Events committee have arranged for Millie Ferguson from Evans and Partners to give us a talk about estate planning and digital footprints at the QTU building at Graham Street, Milton at 9:30 am on Tuesday 17 September. Morning tea will be provided.
We will have the opportunity to learn more about how our lives could be affected in the future, and I’m sure there are many questions you would like to ask. Please join us for another interesting morning by ringing or emailing Pam Mackenzie on 3844 9660 or pamelamack12@hotmail.com for catering numbers.
2024 is the year of socialising and gaining knowledge at the same time. So don’t forget our date claimed for 25 November at Brisbane City Library with easy access to transport. Our conference is taking shape, and details will be published by numerous means. Watch out for flyers and posters near you.
At present, we envisage such topics as seniors’ health, security, volunteering and living with technology, to name just a few suggestions. If you have any subject that you think should be included, please let me know, as all help will be appreciated.
The day will be open to all friends and relatives of members of the QRTA and other associations, such as COTAH and National Seniors.
Watch this space for more information, but remember to keep 25 November free.
