Special schools: we love them!
Queensland Teachers' Journal, Vol 127 No 5, 19 July 2024, page 12.
Special schools and special school teachers play a crucial role in providing education and support to students with a variety of diverse learning needs.
They cater to students with disabilities, learning difficulties, and other special requirements that may not be met in a traditional classroom setting by providing highly individualised learning opportunities, enabling them to access the Australian Curriculum and providing families with a choice of the education journey they wish to send their young person on.
Special schools offer a unique and inclusive environment in which students can thrive and reach their full potential. They provide specialised programs and services tailored to meet the specific needs of each student. Students access the Australian Curriculum via individual curriculum plans (ICPs) at either a different year level partial (DYL-P) or a highly individualised curriculum plan (HIC-P). Teachers undertake extensive adjustments in their planning to ensure students have access to adaptive technology and equipment that supports the personalised approach to learning, so all students have the ability to be successful learners. Many new special schools have been purpose built to support the diverse needs of young people with disability, to ensure access to both facilities and learning opportunities are enhanced.
Special school teachers and leaders are dedicated professionals who go above and beyond to ensure that every student receives the individualised support and resources they need to succeed. They are compassionate, patient, and skilled educators who are committed to making a difference in the lives of their students. They work tirelessly to create a safe and nurturing learning environment where every student feels valued and supported. A variety of specialised health support needs in special schools means that staff undertake specific additional training to support the communication, learning and health needs of the students attending special schools and to enable them to develop effective teaching strategies that cater to those needs.
Like all state schools, special schools present with a variety of challenges, and as such the collaborative approach of involving multiple stakeholders for each student is not uncommon. Teachers and leaders in special schools work closely with other professionals, such as speech therapists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, and behaviour specialists, as well as having regular contact with parents/carers and external agencies to ensure students are provided with comprehensive support. This collaborative approach ensures that students receive the holistic care and attention they need to succeed academically and socially.
Special school teachers and leaders are not just educators; they are mentors, advocates, and champions for their students. They celebrate every milestone, big or small, and provide encouragement and support every step of the way. Special school teachers and leaders understand the importance of building strong relationships with their students and their families, and they work tirelessly to create a sense of community and belonging within the school.
Special schools and special school teachers and leaders play a vital role in our state school education system, by providing a supportive and inclusive environment for students with diverse learning needs. Their dedication, passion, and commitment to their students are truly commendable. Let us celebrate and appreciate the invaluable contributions of special schools and special school teachers in shaping the lives of students and empowering them to reach their full potential.
Thank you to all of our special schools!
